And for those watching in black and white....

I don't know what Mr Marriner was think when he walked into the Hull City dressing room and said those yellow stripes will clash with Newcastle United. I have always found yellow (or old gold as they like to call it) a pretty distinctive colour. I guess the Hull City players just shrugged their shoulders and put on the charcoal grey kit and thought no more about it. Now they may know each other, but for those with failing eyes watching two monochrome teams compete, it was tough viewing. It makes you concentrate more and this is presumably Mr Marriner's thinking. Maybe both teams and the referee should play in colours that are just one pantone apart, so that we all stay more focused on the entertainment. It was not the same though for David Moyes of Everton. Having been sent to the stand for mouthing off (well four rows back), he had a tough-looking security man sit facing him for the rest of the game - and to ensure no colour clash, the ugly brute from Stoke, we presume, wore a brilliant yellow bib to contrast the dapper suit of David Moyes. Thanks to FA rules on security personnel, there was no confusion there. It wouldn't have happened in Keegan's day.

The early claims of Messrs. Marriner and Riley to this season's White Stick Award are perhaps inspired by their Spanish counterpart, Senor Ayza Gamez. In the mere brace of La Liga matches under his jurisdiction this season, Snr Gamez has flashed an amazing 20 cards, though admittedly only 2 of them have been red. Sir Alex must be praying his boys don't encounter him on a European jaunt.
