When you hear of a line up that includes Rui Dina Goncalves, Victor Carballo, Abian Canizos-Garcia and Alberto Canto, you immediately think of a talented Spanish team that would a handful for the best of British sides. Unfortunately, you would be wrong. These players are part of the squad of FC Deportivo Galicia de Londres, a team formed by Spanish immigrants in 1968. From the small beginnings of the Harlesden Sunday League, they now play in the Premier Division of The Cherry Red Books Middlesex County Football League. They are in good company in their league with interesting teams such as Sport London e Benfica, Neasden Foundation (presumably suppored by Sid & Doris Bonkers), Mauritius Sports and the name you must remember in case it comes up in a trivia quiz question, Bison. Life has not been good though for FC Deportivo Galicia as they have only taken 4 points from 11 games.
Their website looks more like a professional club's website. It includes burning questions amongst Spaniards where you can vote if you think the rules of the professional game should be different to the rules at grassroots. I wonder what they mean? An extra goal if your team includes someone whose name is Rui Dina? In all games this season, FC Deportivo Galicia have averaged a 1.7-2.5 defeat, so one extra goal each game and things could turn round. Good luck to our friends from North West London.
