Play Off Lottery
Being the third placed team seems to be the recipe for success as the four most senior play offs were contested. In the Championship, Sheffield United were the only top placed team to qualify for the final as they scraped past Preston North End. They meet Burnley, the third placed team in the play offs, who easily overcame Reading. In Division One, it's the third and fourth placed teams that go to Wembley as Scunthorpe United face Millwall. Penalties featured prominently in the Divsion One play offs. Those who wondered where Tore Andre Flo was now - and, admittedly, there must be few of us - found out when he came on as a late sub and used all his experience to miss the vital penalty for MK Dons. Meanwhile, at Leeds United, Darren Beckford missed a 'normal time' penalty that made all the difference against Millwall.
In Division Two, it's second versus fourth as Gillingham and Shrewsbury Town reached Wembley. Sadly, Rochdale are condemned to another year in Division Two. In the Blue Square Premier, it's Cambridge United or Torquay United that will be returning to the Football League. So, the Play Off Lottery Roadshow rolls on to Wembley next week. FootballCynic recommends that a clapometer is installed at each league ground, so that fans can decide which of the play off teams are promoted. Now, let's hear it for Millwall.

After attending the Millwall-Scunthorpe match I have to comment that these are two inept sides that will be back down in no time. I went to Wembley with a mate of mine who supports The Iron but they make my team Newcastle look positively talented and can assure they are not at all. (FootballCynic writes: I think Ravenous that you are prone to exaggeration. Firstly, it will be at least a year before Scunthorpe come back down and, secondly, you may have to go a lot further down the pyramid before you find a side that make Newcastle United look good. So, Ravenous, is Shearer the man to lead your team back to the big time?)

Ok, point taken, Mr Football Cynic. I think Newcastle United will struggle next season as well. I just hope we are not the next Southampton. As for Shearer - put it this way - lets hope he is back on the Match of the day next season. (FootballCynic writes: This is very selfish behaviour. If he carries on and manages Newcastle United, it will only irritate a few thousand people. On MOTD, he will irritate millions.)
