Jolly good show, chaps

When Sporting played Gent this week in The Ropey League, it conjured up an image of two teams of being jolly decent chaps in a game with no fouls and hardened midfielders saying "after you, old boy" as they considered a tackle. A match between Sporting and Gent seemed a bit a bit like the first FA Cup Final in 1872 when Wanderers defeated Royal Engineers 1-0 at Kennington Oval. Of course, it's unlikely that Portuguese or Belgian players would actually say "after you, old boy", but you get the gist. In fact, the result was a 5-1 drubbing for Gent and Sporting were terribly unsporting as they left Bojan Jorgacevic in the Gent goal looking disconsolate at the end. We wonder whether Gent will sneak through to meet Young Boys in the next round, but that will be an entirely different story.

You will also find Sporting Braga and Sporting Gijon. (FootballCynic writes: Indeed, Anonymous. And, don't forget these great English non-league sides Sporting Bengal United, Sporting BTC, Sporting Crawley and Sporting Khalsa. Now your point was?)
