Durham City move closer to Football League status

Last season, Durham City ended in bottom place of the Northern Premier League Premier Division. They had won 2 of their 38 games, but had lost the rest. The six points that they had salvaged were removed because manager, Lee Collings, played Joshua Home-Jackson under a false name whilst suspended from another club. Durham City was the only club to record no points for the entire season. Whether this is worse than the five clubs that failed to win at all is open to argument. The five winless clubs were Cradley Town (7 draws), Maidenbower Village (2 draws), Blacon Youth Club (2 draws), our old friends, Brodsworth Welfare (2 draws) and Warborough & Shillingford (1 draw).

This year things have brightened for Durham City. The club is placed in mid-table and they go into this weekend’s match against the newly-formed, table-topping Chester FC with some confidence. Durham City used to play in the Football League, but they failed to get re-elected in 1928 and were replaced by Carlisle United.

As for last year’s winless teams, Cradley Town are 7th in the West Midlands League, Maidenbower Village seemed to have disappeared off the planet following the disbandment of the Crawley & District League, Blacon Youth Club have managed one draw from 14 games, Brodsworth Welfare have grabbed 2 draws from 24 games and Warborough & Shillingford seemed to have focused on meeting in the local Cross Keys pub rather than playing football, which was probably a good plan.
