A barrel of laughs

The first eight names on League One team PFA team of the year list were a mix of British and overseas players with unremarkable names. The last three, however, were Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain of Southampton plus strikers Craig Mackail-Smith of Peterborough and Bradley Wright-Phillips of Charlton Athletic – three double-barrelled lower league stars.

It’s been a while since the likes of Ian Storey-Moore and Chris Rhodes-Brown graced the top league of English football, but is this a growing trend? The Premiership already has Gary Taylor-Fletcher of Blackpool, Nigel Reo-Coker of Aston Villa, Benoit Assou-Ekotto of Tottenham Hotspur, Sylvan Ebanks-Blake of Wolverhampton Wanderers and Shaun Wright-Phillips of Manchester City reserves, but there are more double-barrel stars ready to surface.

One has to question Reading’s motives as they have two double-barrels, but both are repeatedly sent out on loan deals across the country - Hal Robson-Kanu and, the more interestingly named, Abdulai Bell-Baggie, who really should play from West Bromwich Albion, are the two players. The one to watch in FootballCynic’s view is the young Stoke City reserve keeper, who is splendidly named Danzelle St Louis-Hamilton. Not only does he have a Scottish football club in his name, we are left to wonder whether Louis is pronounced like Louis Armstrong or, simply, a canonised racing driver. Danzelle, we can’t wait to see you on Match of the Day, mate. Below, Danzelle.
